Question: I have a very small bathroom. Is there any way to make it appear larger without removing any walls?

Answer: Tricks of the trade in perceiving that a space IS what it really IS NOT are a decorator’s saving grace. Depending on the size of the space in both width and height, as well as the lighting and room shape, will determine the best “tricks” to be used to open up an area where needed.

A large window can make a room feel more spacious and outreaching, as well as provide more natural light. Keep that open feeling by using only a simple valance at the top. Or, treat half the window for privacy, leaving the remainder open for the light to enter. Skylights can work the same magic.

Pale and cool colors, such as neutrals, pastels, and soft whites, reflect light, giving the illusion of more space.  Enhance the open feeling by making the trim, cabinets, and other features in the room ‘disappear’. This is simply done by painting them all “out” in the same color, or vary the color tones from lighter to slightly darker.  Introduce bolder colors with the towels, and accessories, along with varying textures.

Draw the eye upward and make the ceiling appear taller with vertical lines such as stripes, or lead the eye upward with crown molding or a border. Avoid large or busy patterns on the walls.

Mirrors do wonders for stretching space. Mirror the long wall of a narrow space to make it seem wider, yet making sure to reflect the room’s assets!

Clear, glass showers or glass shower doors help prevent a room from feeling so full and cramped.
Fool the eye with ‘floating’ wall-mounted cabinets or vanities, making the floor space feel more spacious.  Recessed cabinetry will also feel less cramped in a small area.

Sometimes people take it upon themselves to clean up the black mold that they’ve found. However, sometimes after doing this people notice they are much sicker than they were before trying to remove the mold.

It is very dangerous to attempt mold removal without following mold remediation guidelines, which can include containment setup with negative air pressure to avoid contaminating the rest of the home. Without a containment, the mold flys through the air like a dandelion blowing in the wind. Also, after breaking walls, the black mold becomes airborne and this is what causes major issues and sickness.

Household mold for the most part is not visible to the eye except in high concentrations. A Visual Inspection

Inspection includes asking the client questions regarding the history of the home, searching the home for any possible breaches where moisture issues could occur, observing air flow patterns, inspecting windows and HVAC system, inspecting materials used in the building such as under sinks, attics, walls, carpets, flooring, out door siding, flashing, and eaves systems and more.

Air Testing for Mold

If mold has not been found upon the visual inspection process, then the client and inspector may decide to do indoor air mold testing. This will determine the level of indoor mold spore concentrations, provide a list of spore types, and individual levels of concentrations of spore types such as Stachybotrys, Chaetomium, Penicillium and Aspergillus types as well as several others. Minimum of Two samples must be taken, one outside of the building, which is an outdoor control sample to determine the mold types and concentrations in the air, and another in the suspect area of the home. The additional outdoor control sample is also used to determine if there is an indoor mold growth source.

Tape Testing for Mold

Mold growth may occur on the surface of materials. A tape lift is often used for surface sampling by stripping the suspect area surface with specially designed clear tape. The sample is then transferred to a microscope slide and then placed in a sealed tight container and transported to a laboratory for complete analysis.

Swab Testing for Mold

This type of testing is normally done were visible mold is found to determine the type of fungi. The results of this testing will determine if the mold present in this area is toxic or non-toxic. If visible mold is found in more than one location on the property, a swab test must be done at each location. Laboratory results will determine the type of microbial growth that is present.
